90 Pounds Of Cocaine Found On Cargo Ship Owned By Anti-Drug Senator’s Family

‘Anti-drug’ senator caught in 90-lb cocaine bust scandal.

A cargo ship has been busted by the Colombian Coast Guard containing 90-lbs of cocaine. Embarrassingly for Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, the owners of the boat are related to him, and have made several generous donations in the past to his cause.

His in-laws the the Chao family own the boat, which is operated  by the Foremost Maritime Corporation. The Chao family have been funding McConnell’s campaigns for years, since their first involvement in the 1980’s after McConnell married Elaine Chao. Estimates state that gifts and money to the tune of between 5 and 25 million dollars have been gifted to senator McConnell throughout the history of their relationship.

The most embarrassing part of the story is that McConnell has been publicly outspoken against drugs, in 1996 he launched the “The Enhanced Marijuana Penalties Act”, which aimed to maximize the amount of jail time given to people found in possession of cannabis.

The Nation have reported that the boat in question is called the ‘Ping May‘ and while the Colombian Coast Guard say they have questioned the people who were aboard, no charges have been made as of yet and the investigation is ongoing.

The Ping May is a large cargo vessel, and obviously the drugs could have found their way on board with a number of different people. Drug smuggling is rife in Columbia and other northern South American countries due to the cheap cost of where it is made in the South, and the high demand for it in North America.

The relationship that politicians have with the public is often very different behind closed doors, as seen in this case. Politicians often feel above the law, like they are untouchable and their high profile and influential status makes them an easy target for drug barons and other high ranking criminals who need protection from the law and have enough money to buy it.
